Footfall in Dublin city rose to 160,000 today

Retailers in Dublin are reporting steady progress in opening up the city centre since Covid-19 restrictions on all shops were lifted on Monday.

Today footfall was around 160,000 people, up from 100,000 on Monday.

However, although footfall today was up substantially on the almost 95,000 of Wednesday last week, it is still down considerably on the 400,000 on the same day last year.

DublinTown said around 50% of shops and cafes in the city centre are now open.

Key retailers Brown Thomas and Arnotts reopened their doors to the public today. Penneys is due to reopen its stores on Friday.

The busiest times are reported to be between 11am and 2am, with visitors appearing to be heeding appeals to avoid the city at rush hours in order to leave the reduced capacity on public transport for essential workers.

Currently buses, trams and trains serving the city centre are running with around 20% of normal capacity due to social distancing measures.

Those who live close enough are being asked to walk to cycle into the city.

With customer bathrooms in shops and cafes still closed, around 1,400 people a day have been using the temporary public toilets installed at St Stephen’s Green and Wolfe Tone Square.
